If you’ve been to a home decor or craft shop in the past few years, you’ve probably seen one of these paper flower wall art pieces. With an old book, I recreated my own version and created a slightly rustic, yet noble decoration that is ideal for every wall in your home. This is especially fun because it uses one of my favorite craft supplies, the old books that would otherwise be thrown away. I am sure you will love it!
Book page paper flower wall art
Tricks framed by ornate frames like this are some of my favorite pieces in galleries and shops. It’s just a matter of taking a simple but beautiful decoration and adding a splash of color or style to a frame. I saw frames around pictures, canvas, works of art or simple flowers. This piece came together much nicer than expected and I am very happy with the result.
You can hang this directly on the wall and then just put the frame around the flower. Or you can use the method I used and attach the flower to the frame. I think that’s best because it only adds a hole to the wall instead of 2-3. When you rent, this is especially important to consider.
Is it a wreath or a wall art?
It is both! Designed to go against a wall, for me it’s more wall decoration or wall art than a wreath. However, the basis of this craft is a wreath shape, and you can use it as a wreath or call it a wreath if you prefer. For me, a wreath doesn’t have to be round. It can be anything you want!
This paper flower consists of a fanned out paper that is attached to a wreath frame. This is then attached to a picture frame. It works for everything you want to use it for, and that’s what you call it.
Where can I find inexpensive decorated frames?
One of the first considerations you need to make for this project is which frame you want to use. I think the large ornate frames like this are perfect for this type of decor, but they can be expensive if bought brand new.
So how do you manage to find such a framework without spending a lot of money?
- Look at the frames and old pictures you may already have in your home. If you don’t like the picture, remove it and use the frame for this project.
- Check out the clearance area at a local department store that sells home decor. Many framed items may have holes or tears in them, but the frame is in good condition and at an affordable price.
- Shop at thrift stores or thrift stores where many old pictures cost less than $ 5 and the frame can be used for this project.
- Create your own using crown moldings that you cut and attached in a square or rectangle, and then spray gold.
Do I have to hang this on a frame?
No, you don’t have to hang the old book flower on the frame. It can be used as a wreath on the door or hung directly on a wall. I like this because it adds an element of added beauty and makes it a little easier to attach to the wall. Do what works best for your home and your specific needs.
Can I use paper for this?
You can definitely use any type of paper you prefer to make this paper flower that will fit in the frame. I like the simple folding method because you can use construction paper, scrapbook paper or craft paper if you wish. You could even use plain old newspapers for this project if you want. This works best when the paper can be a little stiff to keep the shape of the fan, but it doesn’t have to be special paper for this to work.
What can I use to secure the paper other than press pens?
The core of this “flower” consists of pins that hold the paper in place. Because you use so many individual paper trays for this, the pens may be a little too high.
I always have a lot of pins in my sewing table, and yes, I bought hundreds of them, so that’s not a big deal for me. If you don’t have them on hand, there are other ways to secure the paper.
Options that may work include hot glue, craft glue, and staples. I think the quickest and easiest way would probably be to staple the paper in place.
If you’re not using the pins, I recommend experimenting with the other options on a small batch to see what they look like before committing to the entire wreath.

How to create a book page paper flower wall art
Tear 50-60 pages from an old book.
Fold the page horizontally in half, then again in half and half a third. The result should be paper folded into a 1-1 1/2 “wide strip.
Unfold the page and fold the accordion style back and forth on each fold.
Continue this process until all pages are folded into fan shapes.
On a small styrofoam wreath shape, beginning at the inner top edge, nail the fanned paper so that one end is open and fanned out.
Keep fixing until you’ve created a line around the form.
Now move a little deeper towards the inside of the form and stick the second layer of paper trays over the top layer.
Repeat this process a third time, filling in all the gaps so that the center is full and loose like a flower as shown.
Rotate your frame so the back is facing up and attach the rope to one side of the frame with hot glue.
Turn the rope over and create a second row of cables and connect them on the other side of the frame. At the end you want to have two pieces of rope parallel and about 1/2 “apart glued to the frame.
Now turn the frame over so that the front of the frame is facing up.
Add hot glue to the rope pieces.
Then place the wreath shape on the rope and hold it.
Now you can attach a picture holder or an additional rope to the back of the frame to hang it on the wall.
If you have book pages left after hanging this large paper flower on the wall, you can check out some of our other favorite options. Make this book page star wall art or a book page hedgehog. You can turn old book pages into bouquets of paper flowers or a book page paper vase. I made it into a rustic old fringed book page wreath and even cute little book page butterflies. The possibilities are really endless!
Another great option to find old or bad frames for this project is Etsy. There are many adornments for ornate picture frames that are affordable or can even be customized to your color and style.
