LED lights are essential tools for any visual content creator. For those who consider mobility a must without sacrificing performance, the new Lume Cube 2.0 may be the perfect solution.
What is the Lume Cube?
It is a small, powerful LED light source that can be used for all kinds of photography and video needs.
Its brightness can be adjusted from 0 to 1,500 lumens, and it comes in a very small cube design. It’s portable enough to put multiple devices in your pocket. The Lume Cube can be remotely controlled with your phone. In fact, you can wirelessly control up to five devices. These small devices can either be used as an external flash for photos or as a continuous light for videos.
Who is behind it?
In 2014, Lume Cube exceeded its donation targets for the launch of its brand new LED lighting system at Kickstarter. The original light is aimed at both still and video shooters and offers 1,500 lumens of light output and wireless bluetooth control in a remarkably compact package. So much power was hidden in a small size (4 x 4 x 4.5 cm) that was also sturdy and waterproof.
Despite the success and appreciation of many users, Lume Cube considered the feedback to launch a second generation with several improvements.
The biggest improvement between the Lume Cube 1.0 and the 2.0 is the light quality of the LED chip. The Lume Cube 2.0 has a greatly improved LED chip that delivers a CRI of 95+ (as opposed to the 85+ in LC 1.0). The 2.0 also had an important makeover with the manual buttons, with the user interface and the small size of the device largely staying the same.
The new version also offers an additional low-light mode with a power range of 1 to 10% in steps of 1%, which can be controlled either via the smartphone app or the physical controls of the Lume Cube.
For whom is that?
The flexibility and portability of the device benefits photographers and videographers who use different styles: mirrorless and DSLR cameras, GoPro, drones and cell phones. The Lume Cube can be customized for everyone.
For still images, the Lume Cube works either as a permanent light source or as an optically triggered slave flash. Alternatively, several lights can be controlled individually or as a group with an Android / iOS app.
The second generation has a USB-C port and the device is fully charged in just 45 to 60 minutes. The battery can be operated for up to 1.5 hours at 100% brightness. If you decrease the intensity of the light, the Lume Cube can work for about three hours.
Lume Cube is waterproof to a maximum depth of 9.1 m, compared to 30.5 m on the previous model. That is deep enough to snorkel or scuba dive with in your free time. Remember that it is not suitable for deeper dives.
Diffusers and Modifiers
It is possible to get creative with colored gels or spread and modify the Lume Cube through a variety of artistic lighting options. Magnetically attach each accessory to the modification frame to create a new lighting effect. The best part is that they are all stackable! Combine several accessories for unique lighting effects.
Some of the accessories available for Lume Cube include flat white diffusers, snoots, barn doors, light bulbs, heat and color gels, or honeycomb grids.
The possibilities with the Lume Cube are endless. If you’re a wedding photographer, think about how cool it would be to use some of these as video lights or extra lights to light up the dance floor!
It is also possible to illuminate portraits, paint with light and capture breathtaking trails of light. You can also attach them to your drone, illuminate water from the inside, illuminate the surroundings to illuminate landscapes, or use them for macro photography. Again, the possibilities of the Lume Cube are only limited by your imagination.
The Lume Cube 2.0 improves its predecessor in almost every respect with improved lighting capabilities, longer battery life and USB-C compatibility. If you’re a content creator looking for an inexpensive lighting solution or something small enough to take up permanent space in your pocket, consider the Lume Cube 2.0 – a very bright and powerful idea.
