I’m a huge fan of adding an absolute ton of Christmas trees around our home as soon as the holiday season comes. This year we’re adding some of these cute little mini Christmas trees made from old blue jeans to our decorations in the cave. They are a bit more casual than some that I have to show and really fit the relaxed atmosphere of this room. This tutorial is very easy to follow and will give you a great little tree to add to your Christmas decorations!
Mini Christmas tree from old blue jeans
When looking for ideas to decorate this holiday season, one of the first things to think of is the tree. This year, you can add some of these cute little mini Christmas trees to your decoration list at the same time, and upcycle old blue jeans! It’s so easy to do and looks gorgeous when you sit on your mantle, an entrance table, or even as part of a holiday village decor.
This mini tree is a beautiful and easy to make decoration. It’s an amazing gift that can be personalized and is a wonderful way to reuse something that might otherwise be thrown away. Make something for your home or as a gift! If you like this idea, be sure to check out my huge list of mini Christmas trees to make even more cute additions to your Christmas decorations.
How can I decorate my tree?
When you are thinking about decorations for the mini Christmas tree, you want to think about what you would put on a real tree when decorating. You can use things that are similar to decorate your miniature tree, but you may also want to think about what would look great with the rustic denim style. Below are some ideas that I love for this little project.
- Add tinsel or miniature garland around the edges of each layer.
- Glue on pearls, stars or snowflake decorations.
- Add a miniature star at the top.
- Glue on rhinestones or sequins to sparkle.
- Spritz on glitter spray to make everything shiny.
What’s best for cutting blue jeans?
Of course, in order for your jeans to turn into a tree, you need to cut them into strips. Good sharp scissors are required to cut, but you may fear that these will not work or that you will have problems. I’ve always preferred to use a rotary cutter for cutting fabric. If you can do so while creating this project, this is probably the easiest way to cut the denim.
When cutting fabric or other projects with a rotating blade, I recommend using a cutting mat for safety reasons. This will keep your surfaces from getting damaged while you work on your next little mini-tree.
What do I use as a tree base?
I used a piece of cardboard to make the form for this tree. This is cheap and easy to find, so obviously a good choice. Of course, you can use a number of different elements as the basis for your tree. I like the idea of using a paper mold or even a foam cone that you might find at your local craft store. I even saw them on my local dollar tree in the craft department for just $ 1!
How can I use this in my holiday decorations?
This little denim tree can be added anywhere you would place other Christmas decorations. I love the idea of adding it next to a small holiday village as a unique addition to the display. You can also make these in different sizes and have a display on your coat with different colors of denim for each tree.
They can also be used as a decoration for a table, centerpiece, or even on bookshelves if you wish. Use your imagination and add it to your decor to make your home look festive this holiday season. It would look great even next to this display of flowers made from old jeans. What a fun idea!
Supplies are needed
How to make a mini Christmas tree out of old blue jeans
Cut strips of denim about 1/2 “wide and of various lengths.
I made mine in 2 “-6” lengths.
Cut a cone shape out of black paper.
Glue the paper in a cone.
Start at the bottom of the cone and tape the denim strips around the cone.
I used different shades of denim and alternated them for a cute, varied look.
Once the cone is covered in denim, glue a star on top of the tree.
Next, decorate the tree with beads or whatever decorations you prefer.
Display your tree for the holiday season!
More blue jean crafts
If you have any blue jeans left over after creating your Christmas tree, you can use these for other cool ideas. I love handicrafts and upcycling is particularly important to me. So using old blue jeans is a natural addition to my craft. Below are some more ideas you can come up with to use up the rest of your leftover jeans scraps.
If you don’t have denim on hand that needs to be recycled, you can actually buy bundles of denim stitching or strips of denim to use in projects like this one. I love helping small businesses and when they have something like this for sale it helps my craft a lot!
You can use any color or wash of denim on your tree.
