Can you use pistachio shells for crafting?
Pistachio shells are great for upcycling handicrafts! Their hard shell ensures that your vehicle can withstand basic wear and tear. And their texture gives each a unique and rustic look that adds a natural element to your piece!
They are also readily available if you are a snacker like me! And you can find them in most grocery stores. And one more thing, they are very suitable for adhesives! Their rough shell is the perfect surface to glue to other crafting materials that you have on hand.
If you still have plenty of clams left over from a family reunion or party, you’re good to go! Since pistachios are a food, remember to wash them quickly. As these often get into people’s mouths, quick cleaning in hot soapy water is advisable! Also remove any small pieces of pistachio that may be left behind. Once dry, the shells retain their color and texture for the perfect, one of a kind craft item!
What else can I do with it?
The great thing about these pistachio shell Christmas tree works is that you can customize them any way you want! Personally, I like the idea of browsing my craft supplies to find little bits and pieces to make them stand out. Think of small pieces and items that could make for good miniature Christmas tree decorations!
This is also a great way for kids to personalize their craft. Use pipe cleaners for garlands, small cotton balls for lights, or whatever stimulates your imagination! The only limits are your imagination and what you have on hand. Half the fun is upcycling and reusing some small parts that you can find around the house!
Another benefit of using pistachio nutshells? They are easy to paint! Since the seashells are pretty tough, they will do well with most types of paint that you have lying around. Once you’ve put together your pistachio shell Christmas tree, it’s easy to paint it to match your existing decor. Here are some other ways to customize your pistachio shell tree craft:
- Use white craft paint to subtly brush the ends of the shells for a layer of snow
- Create different sizes of cones for a range of Christmas trees
- Use glitter spray for a noticeable glare
- Add a strand of fairy lights to give it a nice glow
- Tape a small piece of ribbon in a loop under the top row to hang on your life-size Christmas tree
How do I do these crafts?
The beauty of these adorable Christmas crafts is how easy it is to make! With just a handful of craft supplies, you can be making one of these little Christmas tree crafts in no time. While you can customize it to suit your decor and personality, spray paint is the easiest way to add color.
For a slight snow effect on your pistachio tree, consider using a white texture spray paint. It adds a subtle snow-like texture to your vehicle with a few passes of light. Craft spray glue is what will help your sprinkled texture stick if you prefer. You can usually find this at your local hardware store!
Decorate with this craft
On the other hand, if you want to keep things simple and cheap, you can use any white color you already have! Small upcycled Christmas crafts like this one are great because they are cheap and easy to make in the short term.

How To Make Pistachio Shell Christmas Tree Crafts
First, trace the bottom of a cone shape on a piece of paper, as shown below.
Next, carefully cut along the line you just traced.
Then fold the piece from corner to corner to make a cone shape. Staple where the two ends meet to create a 3D cone shape.
Next, you can start attaching the pistachio shells. Add tape to the cone and press one at a time onto the surface. Lay the open side up, with the following row slightly overlapping the row below.
Place 3-4 pistachio shells at the very top to complete the glue part of this craft! By now you should have something that resembles a rustic looking tree!
Lastly, add your star and use spray glue to easily apply craft snow to the entire surface of the tree!

Keep the entire vehicle at an angle when sprinkling the fake snow over it to ensure that most of it lands on the narrow ends of the pistachios. This will help give your tree a “snowy” look and a familiar winter theme!
