If you like the look of paper lanterns, you will love this simple project to make a floating old book lantern. This easy to make craft is the perfect hanging decoration for any room. You can use it as part of a simple home decor project or give it away as a gift. Create one or more and have a unique beautiful decoration.
Hanging old book lantern
I love tinkering with old book pages. It gives a simple and elegant look to almost any type of craft. I also think it’s great that it’s a great way to reuse the books instead of putting them in the trash. Every time I get a new box of books that are torn apart, stained, or illegible, I look forward to starting to craft.
Paper lanterns are one of my favorite things to do, but this project gives them a whole new meaning. It’s a slightly different lantern style, but still has the simple appeal of paper. Adding a tassel to the bottom gives it a little more style and can be easily customized. What’s not to love about it?
How can I design this lantern in different colors?
This old book lantern can be kept in sepia color or you can color the pages to give it a completely different look. Painting also works to rotate these different colors, but you should use it sparingly.
I used craft paints, watercolors and spray paints on old book pages. All three work great, but they also give different results. I recommend creating a test page first to see if you like the look after painting. You can customize your tassel to match the color for a more coherent look.
How do I remove the book binding?
There are several ways to cut the pages out of the book binding. You can use scissors or something with a straight edge like an Xacto knife or a normal knife. However, it is usually very easy to separate the hard book cover from the glue.
Whatever you choose, be careful not to remove the glue completely as the sides should stay together so that they later take on the lantern shape.
What can I use to hang this lantern?
The lantern can have a cord or loop at the top to facilitate hanging. You can use ribbon or string or even yarn to hang the lantern. Then you can attach the old book lantern to the ceiling with a hook.
There are many very pretty hooks that can be used to hang things up. Most people think of this type of hook to hang plants, but you can use a small one to hang the lantern. You can also use something as simple as a staple or tape, as this lantern is pretty light.
If you are doing this with a larger or heavier book, you should add extra glue to the rope or cord to hold the weight. Of course you don’t have to hang that up. You can just put it on a shelf or coat and it will look beautiful!
Supplies are needed
How to make a hanging old book lantern
Remove the book from its outer binding and leave the glue on the pages intact.
First fold the page inside in a triangle.
Then fold the bottom half up and inwards to form the folded triangle.
Continue this process throughout the book while keeping the folds the same size.
Once you’ve folded the entire page book, set up the book and pull the front pages back to form the lantern.
Attach the two pages of the book with hot glue.
While drying the glue, take a piece of yarn and wrap it around your palm. Wrap this 15-20 times.
Cut the end of the yarn, then slide the long loose end through the middle of the bundle on your hand and tie it tight. Cut this dangling piece of yarn to a longer length, which is then glued in as a tassel.
Cut the longer end of the loop in half and pull your hand off. This yarn loop has dangling ends and the top is tied together.
Cut off the uneven ends of the yarn.
Put some glue on the loose end of the tassel and slide it into the opening at the bottom of the lantern. Add additional glue as needed to keep it in place.
Now cut a piece of rope and tie the end into a knot.
Add glue to the end of the rope and attach it to the opposite end of your lantern.
Once the glue has dried, you can hang your lantern on the ceiling, a door, or a coat.
If you have additional craft books, make sure to bookmark some of my other favorite projects. One of my most recent projects is this old paper book vase. It is so pretty and easy to do that you will love it! Of course, I love a good bouquet of paper flowers or this old book page wreath with flowers. Both are really beautiful in your home.
If you prefer to add more lanterns to your home decor, bookmark this 3D paper lantern, music sheet lantern and this beautiful lantern with lace. All of them are fun and easy to make and beautiful at the same time.
If you don’t want to worry about making a tassel, you can buy silk tassels in tons of different colors and styles from Etsy. I always have a few on hand for craft projects when I don’t want to make my own.
