If you like the country chic style that has become so popular in recent years then you will love this simple paper heart garland. This project is quick, easy, and great for upcycling. In my opinion, there is nothing better than finding something that is easy to make, stylish, and beautiful. Hang this on your coat, on a door, or use it as a party decor.
DIY paper heart hanging garland
I grew up in the south and country chic was definitely something that was the norm there before it gained popularity elsewhere. It’s just a natural romantic and simple style that’s comforting. In fact, this little heart garland really reminds me of my childhood and the decor that was popular in my house.
I love this for a fun project the kids will love to do. It’s so easy to get them to cut paper hearts out of old book pages and then thread them with glue. If you want to do something pretty but fun for her, this is the project to choose!
Where can I hang this garland?
This can be hung around your home in so many ways. Add it to the mantle above your fireplace, in a doorway, or even on bookcases. I also like the idea of making enough of these to put on a table for a party. Sure, it goes with the romantic tones of Valentine’s Day, but it could work for many other parties.
Remember to use this for an anniversary dinner, engagement party, wedding shower, baby shower, or just a romantic meal for your spouse. It’s so simple and affordable that you add it to decor regularly.
Can I use other paper?
Certainly! You can use anything you want to make the hearts. Old book pages are a favorite of mine, but you can also use craft paper, scrapbook paper, wrapping paper, newspaper, or even foam paper if you prefer.
There really is no paper that you cannot use to form the hearts of this project. You can even use the same design with a fabric heart, a crochet heart, or even paper hearts that have been printed and cut with a Cricut machine. It’s just so versatile!
Can I hang paper hearts with ribbon instead of string?
You can string and hang this garland with anything you want! Add unique colors and styles with a variety of ribbons or go for a rope for a more stable look. You can even add braided cords or strips of fabric. All of them are excellent options for making the look unique and new.
Do you want to add shine? Take some pearls or even a strip of sequins to use as a garland base for your heart.
How do I store Garland between uses?
One of the biggest problems with using garlands or banners as part of your decor is how they can be stored after use. It’s so easy to see these get tangled up in a box. What to do?
I highly recommend setting up an area in your attic or Christmas decoration storage area with hooks on the wall so they don’t get stuck between uses. This prevents them from becoming tangled and makes them very easy to find. Another tip I love is to use a plastic trash bag to go over them on the hook so they don’t collect dust between uses.

How to make a paper heart hanging garland
Tear pages out of an old book.
Fold one side in half vertically and draw half a heart on the side at the fold. You can adjust 2-3 per side depending on the size.
Cut out the hearts.
You’ll want 4-5 per garland that you want to hang on the main runner.
Now fold your hearts in half so that they are folded along the middle.
Glue the fold of two hearts together so that the hearts flutter on either side, creating a 3D look.
Next, glue the hearts 4-5 “apart on a piece of string or ribbon and repeat this with 4-5 runners of hearts.
Now tie the runners of the hearts on a long string to hang them on the coat.
Display as desired on a coat or throughout your home.
You will also love this rustic paper vase decor. Such a simple project with old books, but a real show stopper. Another favorite project is making a wreath with an old book page. It’s so simple, but looks so beautiful when it’s on your door. I also love this origami old book page wreath. Super easy to do and simple.
You might want to add this old book page star wall art decoration or even some rustic old book page bouquets to go on your tables. And if fashion is more your forte, make this old upcycling wallet to go!
Crafter’s tip
If you make a lot of these garlands, Etsy will include pre-cut heart shapes in a variety of colors. I even found these in foam paper in my local hobby lobby. It cuts the project time in half.
