A look at this adorable upcycling spoon butterfly and you will want to do a dozen of it. These butterflies are absolutely precious. It is an ideal craft for the children. I think it’s great that the stores in the dollar store are so easy to find and it’s easy to get creative and make them unique. I am sure the kids will love this project as much as I do!
Upcycled spoon butterfly
Upcycling arts and crafts is a wonderful way to reuse materials around the house. A simple spoon turns into a cute little animal in no time. This project is perfect for school lessons when children learn about butterflies. I love the beauty in them that changes from an ugly caterpillar to a beautiful butterfly.
This project is fun to add spring and summer decorations. It’s just fun to see a cute little butterfly sticking out around a plant or protruding from a centerpiece on your table!

How can I use these spoon butterflies for decorating?
Butterflies are the epitome of tenderness and beauty. Adding to home decor is a popular way to turn something basic into something special. I love to get creative with crafts that I do with my kids and this is super easy to add to my regular decor.
- Add them to a fruit bowl on your table
- Stick in a potted plant to create a spring or summer mood
- Place in a vase with artificial or real flowers
- Create a centerpiece in the terrarium style with these in the middle
- Put them in decorations for birthday parties
- Add an utensil holder at a party
- Stay in your herb garden to add extra beauty to the room
- Place a magnet on the back of the spoon and put it in the fridge
How can I customize my spoon butterfly?
Since butterflies are available in all different colors, it makes perfect sense to design your own in different colors. There are tons of fun ideas to customize your butterfly. I tend to do such things only as an example for those who may have limited access to supplies, but I have a lot of ideas in my head to complement them.
- Use glitter foam paper to add shine
- Add a variety of different scrapbook paper styles for different colors
- Draw a pattern on the wings and copy it with markers or colored pencils so that it matches on each side
- Emphasize the shape with pearls or sequins that glitter in the sun
- Use different types of spoons
- Add googly eyes instead of drawing them on the butterfly
Can I use wooden spoons instead?
I made my butterflies with a plastic spoon. It was a great way to upgrade household materials, but you can definitely use a wooden spoon if you prefer. In fact, you could use any spoon you wanted to make them.
If you use a wooden spoon, you can give it a natural wood color or paint it to give it the bright look it has with the plastic spoon. For those who want to take it to the next level, there are always your regular tablespoons. Instead, these could be transformed into a butterfly with pearls and glittering papers or fabrics.
Get creative and turn your butterflies into anything you want. They are a beautiful creation that can be easily adapted to your mood and style.

How to make an upcycled spoon butterfly
Draw the wing shape on firm paper of your choice.
Cut out this shape (one for each butterfly you want to make).
On a patterned piece of paper, trace the same shape, which is only slightly smaller, and then cut it out.
Tip: To get this shape, draw a heart shape on paper, fold the paper at the bottom of the heart, and then cut out the two-sided heart, which now looks like wings.
Glue the smaller scrapbook paper onto the larger one to create the wings for the butterfly.
Make sure both sides match.
Glue the wings on a plastic spoon, making sure that the bottom of the spoon is facing up.
Cut the pipe cleaners into small pieces and curl them to add antennas. Glue the pipe cleaners to the back of the spoon.
Use a crayon or permanent marker to draw on eyes and smiles.
Use an accent color to add color to your cheeks or eyes.
Add decorations to the wings. I used mini flowers, but you can add sequins or pearls if desired.
Now you can view your butterfly as desired.
Butterflies are so beautiful and unique that I have a number of great ideas to add to the craft. One of my recent favorites is this toilet paper roll butterfly, but you could also love this rustic butterfly from an old book page. I even love this rustic burlap butterfly craft. It is so cute and a great addition to any wreath.
The kids will enjoy making this butterfly paper and helping you make this stunning butterfly wall art. So many great ways to include butterflies in your craft.
For projects like this, I love using crayons. I found this great set of 30 acrylic color pencils that are affordable and perfect for times when you want to paint but need a particularly fine tip.
