Wine bottle New Years decoration

The first thing I think of when I think about decorations for the new year is something sparkling. Gold, silver, black and white are the classic colors for New Years Eve parties, so they go perfectly with this idea. You can of course do this with any color you prefer, but the shine looks great for an elegant and classy upcycling bottle decoration.

If you’re planning a fun little celebration, add these great champagne cocktail recipes to your menu too. I prefer mocktails, but this list gives you some great ideas on how to serve up a bit of fizzy drink to usher in the new year in style. You can also enjoy this list of great New Years Eve party ideas. Tons of ways to be fun for everyone!

What do I use for the years?

I found these large numbered candles at a local party store. These are robust and easy to attach to the bottle. You may want to add different types of numbers. Below are some ideas to consider for adding numbers for the current year.

  • Plastic toy numbers sprayed with silver – ideal for parts that do not match other items or that are missing part of a set.
  • Cardboard cutouts from a stencil or hand-drawn that have been painted.
  • Silver painted wooden craft numbers which were then glued in.
  • Large glitter stickers with numbers placed on cardboard and cut out and then glued to the bottle.
  • Cricut or Silhouette vinyl or birch wood cutouts, painted or glued to cardboard and attached to the wine bottle.

Can i use different bottles?

Wine bottles are great for this project because they are large and have a long neck. If you drink wine regularly, you can easily find it in your trash. You can probably pick up some at a local restaurant or from a friend if you don’t have one on hand. Another option is to use a regular glass soda bottle or even a 2 liter soft drink bottle.

You don’t need to use a glass bottle for this project. It’s just as nice to use a plastic bottle that has been sprayed with silver paint and sparkles against the light. My goal is to recycle and reuse as often as possible. So use what you have on hand to make this more unique to your style and home.

What else can I put in these bottles?

I like the little twinkle theme and the addition of tinsel and pipe cleaners, but you can add anything you want to these too. Some artificial flowers are great and can come in a variety of sizes and styles. I love the idea of using white, silver, gold, and black along with some floral picks.

They’re great for decorating, but are also great for storing items and creating a floral accent on a mantle. You can even leave them completely blank and just make them beautiful as standalone items with nothing inside.

What color is best for making these bottles silver?

There are tons of different acrylic and craft paints on the market, available in sparkling silver or gold. I prefer to use a good quality spray paint, however. Rust-O-Leum is my brand for projects that need a nice coat of paint with minimal second sprays. In this case, a can of silver spray paint goes better over the darker bottles than acrylic and with less waste.

How to make a wine bottle New Year decoration

In a well-ventilated area or outdoors, spray the wine bottles from all sides and on the bottle neck with silver spray paint.

Spraying silver wine bottle

Set the bottle aside to dry completely – usually 15 to 30 minutes.

Spraying silver wine bottle

While the bottles are drying, add hot glue to the edges of each of the large numbers.

Scatter glitter over the hot glue, then tap off any excess material.

Adding glitter to the number

Once the paint has dried on the bottles, hot glue a number on each bottle. Attach this to the bottom of the bottle.

Stick number on silver wine bottle

Wrap pipe cleaners around a pen or pencil to create a spiral, at least three per bottle.

Twist the pipe cleaner around the pin

Using a dowel, two per bottle, secure a few sprigs of holiday silver or white tinsel on top.

Attach the tinsel to the dowel

When you’re done, insert 2 wall plugs and 3 of the pipe cleaner spirals into each wine bottle.
