If you want to add a bit of beauty to your day, check out this simple but stunning paper rose ball made from old book pages. A couple of cuts, rolls and a swab of glue and you’ve covered a ball with paper roses. I added a few extra fake roses and a pretty ribbon to hang on the ball and turned garbage into a treasure with this project.
Paper rose ball from old book pages
My obsession with handicrafts and flowers from old book pages combines again to a beautiful addition to your home decor. This little ball ornament is such a fun project! It only takes a little while to create, but it really brightens up a room.
While I am cutting out my roses by hand, you can simply use a template or even an SVG file to do this. Take any type of paper and make it simply rolled flowers that can be easily glued to the ball for decoration. I love turning old books that are rubbish into something beautiful, but I also like to use paper that fits a theme or a holiday.
Where can I hang this ornament?
When you think of ornaments, you may automatically think of the Christmas trees. It’s great for that too, but I like it hanging in windows all year round. I’m also a big fan of adding this to a wreath or even putting it in a bowl as part of a centerpiece.
You can hang this up wherever you want. From a door, windows, ceiling over a table, attached to a chandelier, from a lamp or even on a door handle. It can be used as you prefer! Whether you put it on a Christmas tree as part of a decoration or add it to many other home decor ideas, it’s a super fun and easy project you’ll love.
Variations of a flower ball decoration
This project focuses on using old book pages to create small rolled flowers. Adding this to a round shape, adding some artificial flowers and a ribbon increase an easy project. These are not the only options to complement this decoration! Below are some other ideas that I love.
- Use different types of paper for the roses
- Accentuate with silver or gold pearls instead of artificial flowers
- Spray with glue and sprinkle glitter on the paper flowers
- Use spray paint or stain to paint the paper before rolling it into flowers to add extra color
- Use string or rope as a hanger instead of the tape
- Add artificial green leaves to the bouquet around the flowers for more color and a more natural look
Do I have to use a styrofoam ball?
No! You can use anything you want. Instead of styrofoam, a round wine ball, a paper ball, a plastic ball or even a wooden ball can be used. If you did this for Easter, you can even use an egg of different sizes.
The idea behind this project can be used on boxes, wreaths, balls, wreath shapes and any shape you want. It is about rolling the paper in roses and achieving a more beautiful look in addition to colorful artificial flowers and ribbons.
Supplies are needed
How to make a paper rose ball from old book pages
Tear pages out of an old book. Depending on the size of the styrofoam ball you choose, you will need about 10-15 pages.
Cut these sides horizontally in half and then a circle from each half.
Cut the circles into a spiral that starts from the outside and works inwards. Leave a little piece in the middle to glue the flower together.
Roll inside out and hold the paper until it forms a flower.
Add a touch of hot glue at the end to seal it.
Continue this process until all circles have rolled into flowers.
Glue the flowers on the styrofoam ball.
Cover all sides of the ball until everything is covered.
Cut off a piece of pink ribbon and tie the ends together to hang the paper rose ball. Use a pen or scissors to push the end of the ribbon that you have tied into the center of the styrofoam. Add some glue to keep it in place.
Now randomly add some of the miniature flowers around the ball between the paper flowers.
Hang on a door, a coat or as desired in your home.
Do you love flowers as much as I do? If so, you will absolutely love these simple paper flower projects! Here is another old book to make flower ball decoration. You may also want to make tissue paper ball flowers. Of course, these simple DIY yarn pom pom bouquets are another fun option to make.
You can add a rustic bouquet with old book pages as the centerpiece. I also love these handmade paper flowers as an accent for a wreath, table decoration or even as a gift.
Crafter’s tip
If you’re using traditional craft or scrapbook paper instead of book pages, use these SVG or PDF flower files to print and cut flowers instead of freehand.
